When is fracture fixation surgery recommended for scaphoid fracture?

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone that helps link wrist movement with the forearm. Some parts receive less blood flow than others, so the fracture location and alignment affect healing. A CT or MRI may clarify a break that is hard to see on an early X-ray. Stable fractures may be protected in a cast, while fixation with a screw or another device can hold unstable pieces together. A later operation may be discussed when the fracture has not united or the bone has lost its normal shape.

Keep the wrist and thumb supported, avoid gripping and lifting, and do not return to sport until cleared. Attend imaging and hand review even if pain improves, because a scaphoid fracture can remain tender or heal slowly. Follow the advice on cast care and keep the fingers moving only within the allowed limits. After fixation or casting, rehabilitation is gradual and guided by healing checks.

Seek prompt care for increasing pain beneath a cast, new numbness, pale or cold fingers, worsening swelling, fever, or a wound near the wrist. Return for reassessment if thumb-side wrist pain continues after an injury despite an initially reassuring X-ray.
