When is fracture fixation surgery recommended for distal radius fracture?

The distal radius is the end of the forearm bone next to the wrist. Examination and imaging show the direction of the break, how much the pieces have shifted, and whether the smooth joint surface is involved. Fixation may use a plate and screws, wires, or another stabilising method. A well-aligned, closed fracture may be managed with a reduction, cast, and repeat checks. Numbness, poor blood flow, an open wound, or severe swelling can change the urgency and the treatment plan.

Remove rings early if swelling is developing, keep the wrist supported, and do not use the hand to lift. Elevate it as advised and follow instructions about food, drink, and medicines if an operation is being considered. After treatment, move the fingers as directed, protect the wrist from loading, and attend imaging or therapy appointments so stiffness and alignment can be monitored.

Get urgent care for an open wound over the fracture, fingers that become blue, cold, or numb, rapidly increasing tight swelling, or pain that is not controlled by the advised plan. A splint that feels too tight also needs prompt review rather than being cut or adjusted at home.

Ask whether the joint surface is involved, whether the position is stable in a cast, what fixation method is proposed, and when wrist and finger exercises can safely progress.
