When is fracture fixation surgery recommended for clavicle fracture?

The clavicle, or collarbone, connects the breastbone to the shoulder. X-rays help show whether the pieces line up, whether the break involves a joint, and whether the bone has broken through the skin. Surgery uses plates, screws, or another device to hold the pieces in position while healing occurs. A fracture that is closed and reasonably aligned may be treated with a sling and follow-up imaging instead. The choice depends on the fracture pattern, skin and nerve findings, general health, and the demands placed on the shoulder.

Keep the arm supported in the position advised, avoid lifting or pushing, and arrange prompt assessment after a significant fall or blow. Do not try to straighten the collarbone yourself. Bring details about medicines and previous shoulder problems to the appointment. If fixation is discussed, ask how the operation would protect alignment, what movement is allowed afterward, and when physiotherapy can begin.

Seek urgent help if the bone is visible, the skin is becoming pale or tightly stretched over the break, the hand becomes cold or numb, or pain and swelling suddenly worsen. Trouble breathing, chest pain, or a weak pulse in the injured arm also needs emergency assessment because nearby structures may be affected.
