When is fine needle aspiration recommended for thyroid nodule?

A clinician considers the ultrasound appearance of the nodule, its measured size, whether it has changed, and your medical history. Suspicious ultrasound features can include an irregular outline, tiny bright deposits, or an unusual internal pattern. Not every nodule needs a biopsy: some are monitored with repeat examination or ultrasound instead.

During fine needle aspiration, a thin needle removes small cell samples, often with ultrasound guidance. A laboratory examines the cells. The result may be reassuring, unclear, or concerning, and the next step depends on the report and the wider clinical picture.
