When is fetal heart monitoring recommended for fetal growth restriction?

Fetal growth restriction means a baby is smaller than expected or is not growing as anticipated. Monitoring records the baby’s heart rate and its response to movement or contractions. Clinicians may combine this information with ultrasound growth checks, amniotic-fluid assessment, and blood-flow measurements in the umbilical cord or other vessels. The aim is to identify signs that the placenta may not be meeting the baby’s needs and to guide continued observation or birth planning.

Attend the appointments recommended by your maternity team and ask how long each session may take. Tell them about reduced or changed fetal movement, bleeding, fluid leakage, pain, contractions, or new symptoms. Keep track of your baby’s usual movement pattern as advised. Monitoring does not replace ultrasound or clinical review; your team may adjust the plan when results, growth, blood pressure, or gestational age changes.

Contact your maternity unit immediately if fetal movements are reduced or noticeably different from your baby’s usual pattern. Seek urgent assessment for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions, severe headache, visual symptoms, or sudden swelling. Do not wait for a scheduled monitor when a warning symptom occurs.
