When is female hormone blood panel recommended for hyperprolactinaemia?

Hyperprolactinaemia means prolactin is higher than expected. Depending on your symptoms, a clinician may assess prolactin alongside hormones linked with ovulation, thyroid function and reproductive health. Results can be affected by pregnancy, breastfeeding, stress, recent exercise, medicines and the timing of the sample. One result is interpreted with your history rather than in isolation, and further assessment may be needed to understand the cause.

Tell the clinician about irregular or absent periods, milk discharge unrelated to breastfeeding, headaches, vision changes, fertility concerns and all medicines or supplements. Follow the laboratory’s instructions about timing, food and rest. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Ask whether prolactin should be repeated and whether thyroid or pregnancy testing is also appropriate.

Arrange medical review for persistent cycle changes, unexpected milk discharge or difficulty conceiving. Seek urgent care for a sudden severe headache, new visual loss, confusion or weakness. These symptoms need prompt assessment and should not wait for a routine hormone panel.
