When is surgical excision recommended for moles?

A clinician examines the mole and surrounding skin, then numbs the area before removing the lesion with a margin of nearby skin when appropriate. The wound is closed with stitches or another suitable method. Sending the tissue for laboratory examination can clarify whether the mole is benign or contains abnormal cells. Excision is different from simply shaving the surface, because it aims to remove the full lesion for assessment.

Arrange an examination if a mole changes in colour, shape, border, size, or sensation, or if it catches on clothing and bleeds repeatedly. Bring a list of medicines and mention blood thinners, allergies, previous difficult scars, and immune conditions. Before treatment, ask where the scar will sit, how the wound will be cared for, when stitches are removed, and when the tissue result will be explained.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a mole that is rapidly changing, persistently bleeding, crusting, ulcerated, or becoming painful without a clear injury. After excision, contact the treating service about spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus, fever, wound separation, or bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure.

Ask whether the whole mole should be removed, whether a biopsy is needed, what the examination suggests, how much surrounding skin may be taken, and what alternatives fit your goal. Clarify scar care, activity restrictions, warning signs, and the plan if the laboratory report shows atypical cells.
