When is excimer laser therapy recommended for vitiligo?

Vitiligo causes areas of skin to lose pigment, and the activity and distribution can differ from person to person. Excimer therapy directs ultraviolet light at selected patches, so it can be considered when a dermatologist wants to focus treatment on particular areas rather than expose unaffected skin. The clinician reviews the diagnosis, recent spread, patch location, skin tone, and any medicines or conditions affecting light sensitivity. Pigment return, if it occurs, develops gradually and may differ between body sites.

Tell the clinician about new or changing patches, previous light reactions, recent sun exposure, pregnancy, and medicines or creams used on the skin. Attend sessions according to the prescribed plan and avoid extra ultraviolet exposure unless your clinician advises otherwise. Do not cover the area with irritating products before treatment. Record changes in similar lighting and report discomfort rather than increasing exposure yourself.

Arrange a review if pigment loss is spreading quickly, the skin becomes inflamed, painful, scaly, or infected, or treatment causes blistering or persistent burning. Eye or facial involvement deserves prompt assessment because it may need coordinated care.
