When is an epidural steroid injection recommended for spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis narrows space around nerves. An injection places steroid medicine in the epidural space to reduce inflammation near those nerves; it does not widen the canal or remove a structural narrowing. The clinician considers where your symptoms occur, whether standing or walking brings them on, what relieves them, your strength and sensation, and whether imaging matches the examination.

Note how far you can walk, whether leaning forward changes symptoms, and whether pain, tingling or weakness affects one or both legs. Provide a full medicine and health history, including blood-thinning treatment or infection. Ask how an injection fits with exercises, walking adjustments and other treatments, and what outcome would justify changing the plan.

Seek urgent care for new bladder or bowel-control changes, numbness around the groin, or rapidly progressing leg weakness. After a procedure, contact a clinician promptly for fever, worsening weakness, severe headache or increasing redness at the injection site. Difficulty walking that is suddenly worse should not wait for a planned injection.
