When is an epidural steroid injection recommended for sciatica?

Sciatica describes symptoms along a nerve pathway from the lower back into the buttock and leg. During an epidural injection, steroid medicine is delivered near the irritated nerve to calm inflammation. The clinician checks whether your pain pattern, sensation, reflexes and strength fit the suspected nerve. The treatment is not designed to correct every cause of leg pain or replace rehabilitation.

Tell the clinician whether pain travels below the knee, whether the foot feels weak, and how walking, sitting or bending affects you. Mention all medicines and allergies, as well as infection or blood-thinning treatment. Discuss continued gentle activity, physiotherapy, the intended injection level and how you will judge whether it helped.

Seek urgent assessment if you develop new bladder or bowel-control changes, numbness in the saddle area, or rapidly worsening weakness in the leg or foot. Prompt review is also needed for fever, severe illness or concerning symptoms after an injection. These warning signs can require a different urgent plan.
