When is epidural steroid injection recommended for cervical radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy happens when a nerve root in the neck is irritated or compressed, which can send pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness into the shoulder, arm, or hand. The injection places corticosteroid near the irritated nerve and may reduce local inflammation for a period of time. It does not remove a disc problem or widen a narrowed space, so it is usually one part of a broader plan that can include activity changes, medicines, physiotherapy, and exercises.

A clinician may discuss this option when symptoms continue to interfere with sleep, work, or movement despite an appropriate trial of initial care. The decision depends on the examination, the pattern of symptoms, previous treatment, and sometimes imaging that matches the suspected nerve level.

Arrange an assessment if neck pain travels into an arm or is accompanied by pins and needles, reduced sensation, or reduced strength. Bring a list of medicines and medical conditions, including diabetes, bleeding problems, allergies, infection, or medicines that affect clotting. Tell the treating team about any symptoms that are changing and what activities have become difficult.

Ask how the suspected nerve level was identified, what benefit is realistic, how the procedure will be guided, and what alternatives are suitable. Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines, eating, transport, and monitoring after the procedure. Keep physiotherapy or the recommended home programme in the plan unless your clinician advises otherwise.

Seek urgent medical assessment for rapidly worsening arm or hand weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, or new problems controlling your bladder or bowel. Severe neck pain after a significant injury, fever with a stiff neck, or feeling acutely unwell also needs prompt attention. These features can require a different evaluation and should not be managed by arranging an injection alone.
