When is endometrial ablation recommended for adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the womb muscle. Ablation treats the inner lining of the womb to reduce menstrual bleeding; it does not remove adenomyosis from the muscle. It is therefore more suitable when bleeding is the main concern than when pelvic pain, pressure or an enlarged womb dominates. Pregnancy after ablation can be dangerous, so the procedure is generally reserved for people who have completed childbearing and have reliable contraception advice.

A gynaecology assessment can review bleeding pattern, pain, womb size and other causes of heavy periods. Discuss medicines, a hormonal intrauterine device and other procedures alongside ablation. Your clinician may use an examination and imaging to check whether the womb shape is suitable. Ask how adenomyosis may affect symptom relief and what contraception is appropriate afterward.

Arrange prompt medical care for bleeding that is soaking through protection repeatedly, dizziness, faintness, breathlessness or marked weakness. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, sudden heavy bleeding or a possible pregnancy after ablation. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether adenomyosis has already been diagnosed.
