When Is Emollient Therapy Recommended for Baby Acne?

Baby acne, also called neonatal cephalic pustulosis, can appear as small red bumps or pustules on a baby's cheeks, forehead, chin, or scalp. It is different from dry eczema. Moisturiser can reduce dryness around the rash, but an oily or heavy product may trap heat and contribute to more visible bumps. Avoid treating an infant's face with adult acne products unless prescribed.

Wash the face with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed, then pat dry without rubbing. If the skin is visibly dry, use a small amount of the product recommended for your baby's age and area. Keep saliva, milk, and fragranced products away from the rash where possible, and do not squeeze or scratch the spots.

Contact a clinician if the rash is rapidly spreading, blistering, crusting, swollen, or associated with fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or breathing trouble. Arrange a routine review if it persists, appears after a new medicine, or does not resemble the baby's usual spots. Several newborn rashes look alike and may need different care.
