When is emollient therapy recommended for ichthyosis?

Ichthyosis causes the skin to build up visible scale and lose moisture more easily. Emollients soften scale, reduce tightness, and make the surface more comfortable to move. They do not remove the inherited or acquired cause of ichthyosis. Some people also need a product that loosens scale or another prescribed treatment, and the choice should account for age, body area, broken skin, and sensitivity.

Apply the chosen emollient soon after bathing, when the skin has been gently patted dry, and reapply when tightness returns. Use a thicker product on very dry areas if recommended, smoothing it on rather than aggressively rubbing scale. Keep bathing water comfortably warm, avoid harsh soaps, and do not pick at attached scale. Take extra care on folds and between toes, where excess product can leave the skin damp.

Arrange a dermatology review if scaling becomes painful, fissures deepen, itching disrupts sleep, or the routine is difficult to maintain. Prompt assessment is needed for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, fever, or sudden worsening. New eye, ear, or movement problems related to thick scale also warrant clinical guidance.
