When is emollient therapy recommended for cradle cap?

Cradle cap is a common form of infant scalp scaling. Greasy or flaky patches can stick to the scalp, but they are usually not painful or itchy for the baby. A gentle emollient can soften the scale so it is easier to wash away; it should not be used as a reason to scrape or peel. Cradle cap can sometimes overlap with more inflamed dermatitis, so the appearance, spread, and how your baby behaves matter when deciding whether home care is suitable.

Use only a small amount of a plain product suitable for infants, and keep it away from the eyes, nose, and mouth. Leave it for a short period as directed by a healthcare professional or product instructions, then wash the scalp gently with baby shampoo and use a soft brush to lift loosened scale. Never scratch, pick, or use essential oils, fragranced products, or adult medicated treatments without advice. Wash out residue rather than leaving a heavy coating on the scalp.

Ask a clinician to assess the scalp if it is very red, swollen, wet, bleeding, painful, strongly itchy, or spreading beyond the scalp. Seek prompt care if your baby has fever, seems unwell, develops pus, or has swelling around the eyes. Review is also sensible when scaling persists despite gentle care or when hair loss occurs in distinct patches, since other scalp conditions can look similar.

Ask which emollient is appropriate for your baby’s age, how long it should stay on, and whether the scalp needs a medicated wash. Mention redness, scratching, discharge, spreading patches, or any product that caused a reaction.
