When Is Dupuytren's Surgery Recommended for Dupuytren's Contracture?

Short answer

Dupuytren's surgery may be recommended when a contracture prevents useful hand function, interferes with daily tasks, or continues to worsen after assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main trigger for discussion
Loss of hand function or a fixed finger bend
Recovery support
Wound care, splinting, and guided hand therapy

What the decision involves

Dupuytren's contracture causes thickened tissue in the palm and fingers to tighten, drawing one or more fingers toward the palm. Surgery is considered by examining how far the finger can straighten, which joints are involved, how hand use is affected, and whether the change is progressing. A palpable cord without functional restriction may be monitored, while a fixed bend can make washing, wearing gloves, placing a hand flat, or grasping objects difficult. The operation releases or removes abnormal tissue, but recovery requires hand therapy.

Preparing for a consultation

Record tasks that have become difficult and bring a list of medicines and medical conditions. Ask about the proposed technique, wound care, splinting, hand therapy, time away from specific activities, and the possibility that contracture can return. Do not force a bent finger straight or massage a painful lump without advice. A hand specialist can compare treatment choices with observation or other procedures.

When to seek care

Book an assessment when a finger is becoming harder to straighten, hand function is changing, or the palm develops a tender lump or tight cord. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, drainage, fever, sudden severe swelling, or a finger that becomes pale, blue, cold, or numb. Those findings may signal a separate urgent problem rather than ordinary contracture progression.

Questions for your surgeon

Ask which joint is limiting movement, what functional improvement is realistic, how therapy will be organised, and what warning signs should be reported during recovery.

Questions people ask

Does every Dupuytren's lump need surgery?

No. A lump alone may not require an operation if hand function and finger movement remain useful.

Can Dupuytren's contracture return after surgery?

It can recur or affect another area, so ask the surgeon how follow-up and hand therapy may help.
