When Is Dry Needling Recommended for Myofascial Pain Syndrome?

Short answer

Dry needling may be recommended when myofascial pain syndrome causes persistent trigger-point tenderness or restricted movement despite an appropriate rehabilitation plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Usually considered
Alongside rehabilitation when symptoms remain limiting
Main aim
Reduce local muscle tenderness and improve movement

What this means

Dry needling uses a fine needle to stimulate selected tight muscle bands and trigger points. A physiotherapist first checks whether the painful area fits a myofascial pattern and whether another problem could explain the symptoms. The technique is usually considered an add-on to movement work, stretching, strengthening, and changes to activities that keep the muscle irritated. It does not repair every cause of muscle pain, and improvement can vary between people.

What to do before treatment

Tell the clinician about medicines, bleeding problems, infection near the skin, pregnancy, needle sensitivity, and medical devices. Ask which muscle will be treated, what soreness is expected, and how exercises will support the session. Wear clothing that allows access to the area. Afterward, gentle movement and the agreed home programme may help the muscle settle; follow the clinician's specific advice.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, limits sleep or daily movement, or has not improved with sensible activity changes. Seek prompt medical care for new weakness, spreading numbness, fever, a hot or increasingly swollen treatment area, chest symptoms, or breathing difficulty after a procedure. These features need assessment rather than assuming the pain is a trigger point.

Questions for your clinician

Ask: What findings suggest a trigger point is contributing to my pain? What other treatments should accompany dry needling? How will we judge whether it is helping? What symptoms should make me contact you after the session?
