When is diabetes screening recommended for peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy describes nerve dysfunction outside the brain and spinal cord. It may cause burning, tingling, reduced sensation, numbness, weakness, or pain, often in the feet or hands. Diabetes can damage small nerves when high glucose persists, but alcohol exposure, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disease, medicines, pressure on a nerve, and other conditions can also contribute. A screening result helps guide the search for a cause; it does not prove that diabetes caused the symptoms.

Book an appointment if altered sensation, burning, or weakness continues or affects balance. Describe where symptoms began, how they spread, whether they are worse at night, and whether you have noticed wounds or falls. Bring your medicine and supplement list. A clinician may examine sensation, strength, reflexes, pulses, and walking, then choose blood tests or other investigations based on the findings. Protect numb feet from heat, pressure, and unnoticed injury.

Get prompt medical help for rapidly worsening weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe walking difficulty, or numbness that rises quickly. Seek same-day care for a foot wound, spreading redness, swelling, fever, or a darkened area, especially if sensation is reduced. Sudden weakness on one side, facial drooping, or speech difficulty is an emergency.
