When is diabetes medication management recommended for type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes usually requires insulin replacement, with the regimen matched to glucose readings, meals, activity, illness and daily routines. Medication management is a clinical review of the insulin types, doses, timing, delivery method, storage, injection or device technique and any difficulties following the plan.

A review may be needed after diagnosis, repeated low or high readings, changes in eating or exercise, illness, pregnancy planning, changes in weight, new medicines, side effects or use of a glucose sensor or pump. The purpose is to make treatment understandable and safer for your circumstances, not to encourage unsupervised dose changes.

Bring your current insulin details, glucose or sensor records, meal and activity notes, and a list of other medicines. Mark episodes of low glucose, missed doses, timing problems, skin reactions or device alarms. Show the clinician how you prepare and give insulin if technique is a concern.

Continue the prescribed plan unless your diabetes team gives different instructions. Ask for written sick-day guidance, advice for travel and exercise, and a clear explanation of what to do if a dose is delayed or a supply is unavailable.

Seek urgent help for loss of consciousness, a seizure, severe confusion, repeated vomiting, deep or rapid breathing, severe dehydration or inability to keep fluids down. Contact the diabetes team promptly if glucose remains high during illness, ketones are present when you have been advised to check them, or low readings keep recurring.

Ask whether your insulin plan fits your meals and activity, how to respond to patterns in your readings, and when doses should be reassessed. Clarify storage, injection sites, device settings, missed-dose instructions and the warning signs that require urgent help.
