When are dermal fillers recommended for nasolabial folds?

Nasolabial folds, sometimes called smile lines or laugh lines, extend from the side of the nose toward the corner of the mouth. Their visibility is influenced by facial movement, skin elasticity, tissue support, and the shape of the midface. A consultation considers the fold at rest and while smiling, the cheek and nose-to-mouth transition, skin health, and your goals. Filler can support selected depressions, but it cannot change every cause of a fold and adding product directly into a deep line may not be the only option.

Have an in-person assessment with a qualified medical injector. Discuss your health conditions, allergies, medicines, previous filler, dental work, and any current rash or infection. Ask which product is proposed, where it will be placed, how swelling and bruising are handled, and when the result will be reviewed. A conservative plan may be adjusted only after the tissue has settled. Good facial assessment includes a conversation about alternatives, not only the injection itself.

Notify the clinic quickly if you develop escalating pain, unusual skin paleness or darkness, marked swelling, or blisters. Seek urgent care for visual disturbance, severe headache with eye symptoms, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms appear after treatment.

Ask whether the fold is driven mainly by midface support, skin change, or movement; what area will be treated; what temporary effects are expected; and how urgent concerns are managed.
