When Are Dermal Fillers Recommended for Acne Scars?

Acne scars can be indented, raised, or discoloured, and one treatment does not suit every pattern. A filler places material beneath a depressed scar to lift or support the hollow, which may make the surface look more even. A dermatologist assesses scar depth, edges, tethering, skin thickness, active acne, and your history of reactions or raised scars. Fillers address selected contour changes; they do not treat ongoing acne, redness, or brown marks by themselves.

Bring a list of medicines, allergies, previous cosmetic treatments, and any history of cold sores or unusual scarring. Tell the clinician if acne is still active, if the area is inflamed, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask which filler is being proposed, where it will be placed, how the result will be reviewed, and which alternatives may better match your scar pattern. Do not inject a painful, infected, or actively inflamed area without medical advice.

Before treatment, seek assessment for a painful, warm, swollen, or draining acne lesion rather than treating it as a scar. After an injection, contact the provider urgently for severe or increasing pain, marked swelling, skin colour change, blistering, vision symptoms, or unusual weakness. These symptoms need prompt clinical assessment.
