When Is Curettage and Cautery Recommended for Seborrheic Keratosis?

Seborrheic keratoses are usually benign, waxy or rough growths that can look stuck onto the skin. Curettage uses a small instrument to gently remove the visible growth. Cautery applies controlled heat to help treat the base and limit bleeding. A clinician may choose this approach when the lesion is raised and accessible. The appearance of a changing or unusual growth should be assessed before removal, because not every dark or scaly spot is a seborrheic keratosis.

Arrange an examination if the growth bleeds after minor contact, becomes persistently itchy, rubs against clothing, or is changing in colour, outline, or thickness. Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and any history of raised scars. After treatment, follow the wound-care instructions, keep the area clean, and avoid picking the healing surface. A crust may form and the treated area can look pink or darker while it settles. Ask whether sun protection is appropriate for the site.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a spot that grows quickly, develops irregular colour or edges, bleeds without being rubbed, forms a persistent sore, or changes in a way you cannot explain. After treatment, contact the clinic if pain, warmth, swelling, discharge, or redness is worsening rather than settling, or if bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure.
