When is cryotherapy recommended for genital warts?

A clinician applies extreme cold to the wart so the treated tissue separates as the skin heals. Genital skin can be sensitive, and treated areas may sting, swell, blister, or form a crust before settling. Several appointments may be needed, particularly when there are multiple lesions or when some warts remain after the first session.

Cryotherapy treats visible lesions; it does not remove the underlying human papillomavirus from the body. A genital growth can resemble another skin condition, so examination matters before freezing is chosen.

Arrange an assessment with a dermatologist or sexual-health clinician, especially if the growth is bleeding, unusually firm, pigmented, or not clearly wart-like. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, immune-system problems, medicines, allergies, and previous reactions to skin treatments.

After treatment, keep the area clean and follow the wound-care instructions you receive. Avoid picking a blister or crust, and pause sexual contact until the skin has healed and discomfort has settled. Do not apply over-the-counter wart products to genital skin unless a clinician specifically advises it.

Contact the treating clinic if pain is worsening rather than easing, redness is spreading, drainage develops, or you develop fever. Seek prompt assessment for heavy bleeding, difficulty passing urine, or a rapidly changing lesion. New lesions after treatment also deserve review because visible warts can recur or a different diagnosis may need consideration.

Ask whether the growths are clearly genital warts, how many treatment sessions might be needed, and what healing changes are expected. Discuss alternatives, the chance of temporary pigment change or scarring, ways to reduce transmission, and whether sexual-health screening is appropriate.
