When is cryotherapy recommended for Bowen's disease?

Bowen’s disease, also called squamous cell carcinoma in situ, is an early form of skin cancer confined to the outer skin layer. It can appear as a persistent scaly, red, or brown patch. Cryotherapy freezes the treated tissue so abnormal cells are destroyed as the area heals.

Freezing may suit a clearly defined lesion in a location where healing is expected to be manageable. It may be less suitable for a large, thick, recurrent, poorly defined, or high-risk lesion. Treatments that remove tissue for examination or cover a wider field may be preferred in some situations.

Discuss the diagnosis and treatment plan with a dermatologist. Ask whether the lesion has been sampled, whether its borders are clear, and why cryotherapy is preferable to excision, curettage, topical treatment, or another approach for your site.

Share your history of skin cancer, immune suppression, poor wound healing, raised scars, and medicines that affect bleeding. After treatment, keep the wound protected as directed and avoid picking the blister or crust while it heals.

Contact a clinician promptly if the patch enlarges, becomes painful, bleeds, ulcerates, or changes despite treatment. Seek advice after freezing for spreading redness, pus, fever, increasing pain, or a wound that is not healing as expected.

Ask how Bowen’s disease was confirmed, whether a biopsy or tissue-removing treatment would provide useful information, how the lesion’s location affects healing, what recurrence would look like, and when follow-up should occur.
