When is cryolipolysis recommended for submental fullness?

Submental fullness can reflect a local fat pad, skin laxity, facial structure, or a combination of factors. Cryolipolysis uses controlled cooling with a device designed for the area to target fat cells under the chin. It is not intended to treat a neck lump, thyroid swelling, infection, or unexplained enlargement.

A clinician needs to assess how much tissue can be safely drawn into the applicator and whether the skin is likely to settle well. Cooling may be less suitable when loose skin or muscle structure is the main concern. Changes appear over time as treated cells are cleared by the body.

Book an in-person assessment and describe when the fullness appeared, whether it changes, and any pain or swallowing symptoms. The clinician should examine the area and discuss other options when fat is not the only contributor.

Mention cold sensitivity, altered sensation, circulation problems, prior chin or neck procedures, medicines, and skin conditions. Clarify the expected swelling, numbness, tenderness, support during recovery, and follow-up plan before consenting.

Arrange medical assessment promptly if fullness is new, rapidly enlarging, one-sided, painful, firm, associated with difficulty swallowing or breathing, or accompanied by voice change. After treatment, report severe pain, blistering, worsening redness, or an enlarging hard area.

Ask whether the fullness is mainly fat, whether the applicator fits safely, how skin laxity affects the plan, what alternatives exist, when improvement should be reviewed, and which symptoms would need earlier contact.
