When is cortisone injection recommended for rotator cuff tendinitis?

Rotator cuff tendinitis irritates the tendons that help lift and rotate the shoulder. Cortisone placed near the inflamed tissue can reduce pain for a period, making carefully graded exercise easier. It does not rebuild tendon tissue or correct every cause of irritation, such as repeated overhead loading or poor shoulder mechanics. A clinician will consider the diagnosis, examination findings and nearby tendon health before recommending it.

Share your pain pattern, work or sport demands, medicines and any history of diabetes or infection. After the injection, protect the shoulder from strenuous loading for the advised period. Resume prescribed mobility and strengthening gradually rather than testing the shoulder with heavy overhead activity. If relief is brief or symptoms return, arrange a review instead of repeating injections without reassessment.

Get prompt medical advice for sudden loss of strength, inability to lift the arm, a new injury or pain that is rapidly worsening. After injection, seek urgent assessment for fever, spreading redness, increasing warmth, drainage or severe pain. Those features can indicate a complication or a different shoulder problem.
