When Is a Cortisone Injection Recommended for Hip Impingement?

The medicine is placed into or around the hip joint, often with imaging guidance because the joint lies deep beneath the skin. Reduced pain can help clarify whether the joint is the main source of symptoms and may make movement rehabilitation easier. The injection does not reshape the hip bones or repair a labral injury. Its value must be weighed against the examination, imaging, activity goals, and other possible causes of groin pain.

Before treatment, describe the movements that trigger pain, such as deep sitting, pivoting, or sport-specific positions. Review physiotherapy, strength work, movement retraining, and temporary activity modification with the clinician. Discuss diabetes, blood-thinning medicine, infection, allergies, and prior injections. If pain improves, use that window for a planned rehabilitation programme rather than immediately returning to painful loading.

Seek prompt care for inability to bear weight, a hot or swollen hip, fever, severe pain after a fall, new leg weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. After an injection, contact the treating service for fever, spreading redness, drainage, or worsening pain. Sudden severe hip pain needs assessment before assuming impingement is responsible.
