What it can and cannot do

Hallux rigidus is stiffness and arthritis in the joint at the base of the big toe. Corticosteroid placed in the joint may reduce irritation and make walking more comfortable for a time. It does not restore lost joint space or remove a bony prominence, so the expected benefit should be weighed against the findings on examination and imaging.
