When Is a Cortisone Injection Recommended for Ankle Osteoarthritis?

Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory medicine placed into or around the ankle joint. It may calm an inflammatory flare and make walking or rehabilitation easier for a period of time, but it does not rebuild worn cartilage or reverse the underlying arthritis. The clinician may use examination findings and imaging to identify the pain source. Other care can include footwear changes, activity adjustment, physiotherapy, strength work, and medication advice.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, infection, skin problems near the ankle, allergies, blood-thinning medicine, and previous injections. Ask what activity is appropriate immediately afterwards and how the injection fits with exercise or other treatment. Arrange follow-up if pain persists, because repeated injections are not automatically suitable and ongoing symptoms may need a different plan.

Seek urgent medical advice for a hot, very swollen, increasingly red ankle with fever or feeling unwell, especially after an injection. New severe pain, spreading redness, drainage, or inability to bear weight also needs prompt assessment. Sudden calf swelling or breathlessness requires emergency help and should not be attributed to arthritis without evaluation.
