When is cone biopsy recommended for cervical cancer?

A cone biopsy, also called conisation, removes a cone-shaped section from the cervix. A laboratory examines the tissue to identify the type and extent of cell change and to check whether abnormal cells reach the edges of the sample. It can help clarify results when a cervical screening sample or a smaller biopsy does not show the full area clearly. The procedure may also remove some early changes before they develop further. A cone biopsy is not automatically needed for every abnormal cervical result; the choice depends on the test findings, the location of the cells, and whether cancer is suspected.
