When is CO2 laser resurfacing recommended for syringoma?

Syringomas are benign sweat-duct growths that often appear as small, firm, skin-coloured bumps around the eyelids or upper cheeks. CO2 energy can remove or reduce selected bumps by treating the tissue in a controlled way. The eyelid area requires particular caution because it is thin and close to the eye. Diagnosis matters: a new, one-sided, rapidly changing, pigmented, bleeding, or symptomatic bump should be assessed rather than automatically treated as a syringoma.

The goal is improved texture and visibility, not a promise that every bump will disappear. New lesions can develop, and treatment may cause redness, crusting, scarring, or temporary or lasting colour change.

Choose a dermatologist or laser clinician experienced with periocular procedures. Explain eye disease, contact-lens use, cold sores, medicines, previous pigment changes, and any tendency to thick scars. Ask whether the diagnosis needs confirmation, how the eyes will be protected, and whether a small test area or another approach is safer. Arrange time for swelling and surface healing. Follow instructions about cleansing and ointment, avoid rubbing or picking, and protect the area from sunlight once the clinician says it is appropriate.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if swelling, pain, redness, or discharge is worsening. Seek urgent eye care for vision change, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, difficulty opening the eye, or a chemical exposure. Fever, pus, spreading redness, or persistent bleeding also needs prompt medical advice. Any bump that changes or bleeds should be reviewed rather than presumed to be a syringoma.
