When is CO2 laser resurfacing recommended for rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma involves thickened, enlarged skin and oil glands of the nose, often in the setting of rosacea. CO2 laser treatment can vaporise or sculpt selected excess tissue so the nasal surface is more even. The clinician must distinguish rhinophyma from other growths, infection, or a suspicious lesion before treating. If the tissue is uneven, bleeding, ulcerated, or changing, examination and sometimes sampling are needed rather than cosmetic reshaping alone.

The procedure changes the contour; it does not necessarily control the rosacea tendency that contributed to inflammation. A treatment plan may therefore include separate management of flushing, papules, pustules, or irritation.

Have the nose assessed by a dermatologist or facial laser surgeon experienced with tissue removal. Explain blocked nasal breathing, tenderness, recurrent flushing, medicines, bleeding problems, and any history of poor healing or thick scars. Ask how much tissue can be reduced safely, whether a biopsy is needed, and how the nasal contour will be protected. Prepare for an open healing surface with redness, crusting, and swelling. Follow wound-care instructions closely, avoid picking, and shield the nose from sun while new skin forms.

Call the treating service if bleeding continues, swelling worsens, pain becomes severe, or the nose develops pus, spreading redness, fever, or a foul odour. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or an allergic reaction. A new bleeding or non-healing area on the nose needs medical assessment even if rhinophyma is already present.
