When are clinical trials recommended for metastatic cancer?

Metastatic cancer can arise from different primary cancers and can behave differently from one person to another. A study may require a particular tumour type, molecular finding, spread pattern, prior treatment, scan result, or level of organ function. It may test a new medicine, combination, targeted approach, immune treatment, procedure, or symptom-support method. The research team explains the study’s purpose, visits, tests, possible harms, alternatives, and what happens if the cancer grows.

Ask the oncology team to look for suitable studies before starting a new line of treatment and whenever scans or symptoms suggest a change. Take pathology and molecular reports, scan records, and a complete medicine list to the appointment. Clarify whether treatment can continue near home, whether another centre is involved, and which costs or travel arrangements require planning. Choosing not to join does not remove the right to standard treatment or supportive care.

Get urgent help for severe pain that is new or uncontrolled, sudden weakness, confusion, a seizure, severe breathlessness, chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. New symptoms can signal a complication in the organ involved or a treatment reaction. Emergency assessment takes priority over arranging a trial consultation.
