When is chronic disease review recommended for hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism happens when the thyroid does not make enough hormone for the body's needs. A review checks how you are feeling, how you take thyroid replacement, and whether the dose still fits your situation. Your clinician may review thyroid blood tests, pulse, weight changes, medicines, pregnancy plans, and other conditions that can affect treatment. A review is also sensible after starting or changing treatment, after a long gap in care, or when tiredness, cold intolerance, constipation, mood changes, or palpitations appear or persist.

Book an appointment if your planned monitoring is overdue or your symptoms have changed. Bring the name and dose of every medicine and supplement, note when you take it, and mention missed doses or changes in brands. Do not alter or stop thyroid medicine without advice. Ask whether blood testing should be arranged before the appointment and when results should be reviewed. Pregnancy, fertility treatment, or a new medicine should be mentioned because these may change the monitoring plan.

Contact a clinician promptly for marked worsening of weakness, confusion, fainting, chest discomfort, breathlessness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or new severe confusion. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether hypothyroidism is already diagnosed.
