When is child health consultation recommended for respiratory syncytial virus infection?

Respiratory syncytial virus infection often begins with cold symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, and fever. In some children, inflammation and mucus narrow the small airways, leading to bronchiolitis with faster breathing, wheeze, or difficulty feeding. Babies and children with underlying heart, lung, or immune problems may need closer observation. A clinician can listen to the chest and assess breathing effort, oxygenation, feeding, and hydration.

Offer smaller, more frequent feeds and clear the nose gently before feeding if congestion interferes. Keep the child comfortable, encourage fluids, and monitor wet nappies and alertness. Wash hands, avoid smoke exposure, and keep the child away from vulnerable infants while unwell. Do not use cough medicines or antibiotics unless a clinician specifically recommends them.

Call emergency services for pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe struggle to breathe, grunting, or a child who is difficult to wake. Seek urgent assessment if the ribs pull in with breaths, feeding becomes very poor, wet nappies fall noticeably, the child is unusually floppy, or symptoms are getting worse.
