When is child health consultation recommended for febrile seizures?

A febrile seizure is a seizure that occurs with a fever in a child, often during an infection. The movements may include stiffening, jerking, unresponsiveness, or eye deviation. A clinician needs details about the duration, body movements, breathing, recovery, and temperature, because not every event during fever is a febrile seizure. Most children recover, but assessment helps distinguish a straightforward episode from one needing further investigation.

Arrange medical review after a first event, even if the child seems better. During another seizure, place the child on a safe surface on their side, move nearby objects away, and observe the time. Do not restrain the movements, put anything in the mouth, or give food or drink until the child is fully alert. Record a video only if this can be done without delaying care.

Call emergency services if the seizure lasts longer than five minutes, repeats without recovery, affects breathing, causes injury, or is followed by persistent unresponsiveness. Get urgent help for a stiff neck, severe breathing difficulty, a purple or non-blanching rash, marked dehydration, or a child who remains unusually confused or weak.
