When Is Child Health Consultation Recommended for Colic in Babies?

Colic describes repeated periods of intense crying in an otherwise well baby, often with difficulty settling. A consultation helps check the baby’s feeding, weight gain, sleep, tummy, skin, temperature, and general behaviour. It also gives parents a chance to discuss soothing and the effect of crying on the household.

Crying can sometimes signal reflux, constipation, infection, injury, feeding difficulty, or another problem. A change from the baby’s usual pattern, a weak cry, or crying with poor feeding deserves assessment rather than being assumed to be colic.

Keep a simple record of crying episodes, feeds, vomiting, stools, wet nappies, sleep, and what settles the baby. Offer normal feeds and burping, hold the baby safely, and take breaks if you feel overwhelmed. Place the baby on their back in a clear cot for sleep. Never shake a baby.

Seek urgent care for fever in a young baby, breathing difficulty, blue or pale colour, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, a swollen abdomen, marked sleepiness, seizure, poor feeding, or noticeably fewer wet nappies. Get immediate help if you fear you may lose control while the baby is crying.
