When Is Child Health Consultation Recommended for Bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis is a viral infection that causes swelling and mucus in the small airways. Babies may develop a runny nose, cough, noisy breathing, faster breathing, and difficulty feeding because breathing and sucking become harder together. A clinician checks the child’s breathing effort, oxygen level when needed, hydration, alertness, and ability to take fluids.

Young infants and children born prematurely or with heart, lung, or immune conditions may need earlier review. A consultation can distinguish bronchiolitis from other causes of breathing difficulty and provide a monitoring plan.

Offer smaller feeds more often, keep the child upright while awake and supervised, clear visible nasal mucus gently, and monitor wet nappies and alertness. Keep smoke away from the child. Do not give cough medicines or start antibiotics unless a clinician specifically advises them. Record changes in breathing and feeding to describe at the consultation.

Seek emergency care if the child has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe pulling in at the ribs or neck, grunting, extreme sleepiness, or cannot drink. Prompt assessment is also needed when feeds are much smaller, wet nappies are fewer, or breathing is becoming faster or harder.

Ask how to count breathing, which feeding or nappy changes matter, how often to check the child overnight, and exactly which signs mean you should return urgently.
