When Is a Chest X-Ray Recommended for Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis can affect lung tissue, and a chest X-ray may show changes that prompt further assessment. It may be considered for a persistent cough, coughing blood, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, chest symptoms, or close contact with someone who has infectious tuberculosis. These symptoms can have other causes, so a chest X-ray does not by itself confirm tuberculosis.

When tuberculosis has been diagnosed, imaging can help the clinical team understand the lung involvement and follow changes during care. Sputum or other laboratory tests may still be needed because imaging cannot identify the germ or determine whether disease is infectious.

Tell the clinician about symptoms, previous tuberculosis, contact with a person with tuberculosis, travel or residence in areas where it is common, pregnancy, and medicines that affect immunity. Attend any requested testing promptly. If you have a persistent cough, ask how to reduce close exposure to others until the clinician explains the next steps.

Seek urgent help if you cough up more than a small amount of blood, have severe breathlessness, severe chest pain, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness. Arrange prompt medical review for a cough that persists with fever, night sweats, weight loss, or marked tiredness, especially after a known exposure.

Ask which tests are needed in addition to the X-ray, whether you should limit close contact, how results will be explained, and what symptoms should trigger immediate review.
