When is chemotherapy recommended for osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma can begin in bone and may also involve the lungs or other sites. Chemotherapy before surgery can treat tumour cells throughout the body while the surgical team plans removal of the bone tumour. Treatment after surgery is used to continue addressing cells that cannot be seen on scans. The exact medicines and sequence depend on the biopsy, scan findings, tumour position, response to the first treatment and general health. Surgery and, in selected situations, other local treatments are considered alongside systemic therapy.

Ask how the tumour’s response will be assessed and how limb function, mobility and rehabilitation will be supported. Discuss fertility preservation before treatment when relevant, and tell the team about hearing, kidney, heart or nerve conditions. Keep a record of medicines and report new pain, swelling or reduced movement.

Get urgent help for a new inability to bear weight, sudden severe limb pain, a fall with suspected fracture, chest pain or difficulty breathing. During chemotherapy, contact the team urgently for fever, chills, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, unusual bleeding or marked weakness.
