When is chemotherapy recommended for voice box cancer?

Voice box cancer, also called laryngeal cancer, is planned according to the tumour’s exact location, size, spread to lymph nodes, effect on the airway and ability to protect swallowing. Chemotherapy may be given with radiotherapy when preserving the voice box is being considered, or when the team needs combined treatment for locally advanced disease. It can also be used before or after surgery in selected situations. If cancer returns or spreads, systemic treatment may help control it and relieve symptoms.

The team weighs kidney function, hearing, nutrition, dental health, swallowing, breathing, voice needs and other medicines before selecting treatment. A speech and swallowing specialist, dietitian or airway team may be involved alongside oncology care.

Ask how the proposed treatment could affect voice, swallowing, breathing and the possibility of preserving the voice box. Arrange dental and nutrition reviews when advised, and discuss speech therapy, feeding support, smoking or alcohol cessation, fertility and current medicines. Report increasing hoarseness, pain, coughing with drinks, reduced intake or breathing changes rather than waiting for the next visit.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, noisy breathing that is worsening, blue lips, sudden neck swelling, inability to swallow saliva, collapse or confusion. Contact the cancer team promptly for fever, dehydration, repeated vomiting, bleeding, worsening mouth or throat pain or a sudden decline in swallowing.
