When is chemotherapy recommended for Hodgkin lymphoma?

Hodgkin lymphoma begins in the lymphatic system and can involve lymph nodes or organs outside them. Because lymphoma can affect more than one area, medicines that travel through the bloodstream are often central to treatment. The team uses scans, biopsy results, blood tests, symptoms and examination findings to choose a regimen. Radiotherapy may be added for selected areas, while additional medicines or a different plan may be considered if lymphoma does not respond or returns.

The treatment schedule is divided into cycles, with assessments during care. The team may adjust doses for blood-count changes, infection, nerve symptoms, lung or heart concerns, or other medical conditions. Fertility, pregnancy, vaccinations and medicines should be discussed before treatment begins.

Ask which lymphoma areas the plan is intended to treat and how response will be assessed. Tell the team about infections, breathing problems, heart conditions, numbness, medicines and supplements. Discuss fertility preservation before treatment if relevant, and ask about a central line, nausea control, infection precautions and safe activity. Keep a record of fever and new symptoms between cycles.

Report fever, chills, new cough, painful urination, persistent diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, unusual bruising or bleeding promptly. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious allergic reaction. During chemotherapy, infection can worsen quickly even when symptoms first seem mild.
