When is chemotherapy recommended for gallbladder cancer?

After surgery, medicine may be offered because gallbladder cancer can leave cells beyond what the surgeon can see. Before surgery, treatment may be used when imaging suggests that reducing the tumour could help an operation. If surgery is not possible because the cancer involves nearby structures or distant areas, chemotherapy can slow disease and manage symptoms. It may also be used when the cancer comes back. Decisions take account of the pathology, liver and kidney function, bile drainage, other illnesses, and how treatment could affect daily life.

Ask the hepatobiliary or oncology team whether the goal is to remove hidden cells, make surgery possible, control growth, or relieve symptoms. Discuss scans, blood tests, the proposed medicines, treatment visits, side effects, and how bile duct or liver problems could change the plan. Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, chills, worsening yellow skin or eyes, dark urine with pale stools, repeated vomiting, or new confusion. Inability to keep fluids down can lead to dehydration and needs timely advice, especially when liver or bile drainage is affected.
