When is chemotherapy recommended for follicular lymphoma?

Follicular lymphoma can behave differently from one person to another. If it is not causing problems, the team may monitor it with examinations, blood tests, and scans rather than start medicine immediately. Treatment becomes more likely when lymph nodes are growing, symptoms are troublesome, blood counts are affected, or an organ is under pressure. Chemotherapy may be combined with an antibody or another medicine. A biopsy can be considered if the pattern changes quickly, because the treatment plan may need to reflect a different lymphoma behaviour.

Bring a list of symptoms, medicines, infections, and previous cancer treatments to your appointment. Ask how the team is measuring disease activity and whether observation, an antibody-based plan, chemotherapy, or another option fits your situation. Call the lymphoma team promptly for fever, chills, worsening breathlessness, unusual bleeding, severe diarrhoea, or vomiting that prevents fluids. Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, or sudden confusion. Rapidly enlarging swelling, drenching night sweats, or a marked decline in energy should be reported soon, even if the next appointment is not close.
