Treatment may be discussed when symptoms develop, lymph nodes or the spleen become troublesome, blood-cell production is affected, or testing shows clear progression. The team considers chromosome and protein findings, previous treatment, infections, kidney function, age, and general health. Modern CLL care may use targeted medicines or antibody treatments, so traditional chemotherapy is not suitable for everyone. The recommendation balances disease control with the possible effects of each option.

Ask whether treatment is needed now and what finding led to that recommendation. Discuss chemotherapy alongside targeted or antibody medicines, including the expected benefits, schedule, monitoring, and effects on blood counts, infection risk, nerves, or fertility.
