When is chemotherapy recommended for cervical cancer?

For locally advanced cervical cancer, chemotherapy is often given with radiotherapy to make the cancer cells more sensitive to radiation. It may also be considered before surgery in selected situations, after treatment when the team believes additional whole-body treatment could help, or when cervical cancer has spread or returned. The plan depends on the cancer’s stage, size, nearby lymph nodes, kidney function, blood counts, general health, and the treatments already given. Chemotherapy is only one part of a wider plan and may be combined with surgery, radiotherapy, targeted medicine, or immunotherapy.

Ask whether chemotherapy is being proposed alone or with radiotherapy, and what outcome the team is seeking. Review the drug name, treatment schedule, monitoring, and effects on blood counts, kidneys, nerves, hearing, fertility, and bowel or bladder symptoms. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, kidney problems, pregnancy possibility, and any plans for future fertility. Arrange practical support for travel, rest, meals, and care after treatment if needed.

Call the cancer team promptly for fever, chills, painful urination, new breathlessness, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, unusual vaginal bleeding, or inability to drink. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, collapse, severe breathing trouble, or sudden confusion. Do not wait for the next appointment when symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening.
