When is chemotherapy recommended for bone cancer?

Primary bone cancers include different tumour types, and they do not all respond to chemotherapy in the same way. When chemotherapy is useful, it may be given before surgery to shrink the tumour and treat cancer cells that cannot be seen on scans. Surgery then aims to remove the tumour while preserving limb function when possible. Further chemotherapy after surgery may target remaining microscopic cells. If the cancer has spread or returns, chemotherapy can be considered as part of a plan to control growth, reduce symptoms or make another treatment possible. The pathology result is central to choosing medicines.

A specialist team will review the biopsy, scans of the bone and other areas, the tumour position, and your strength and mobility. Blood tests check blood counts, kidney and liver function before medicines are selected. Tell the team about hearing changes, numbness, heart or kidney conditions, current medicines and fertility concerns. Ask how chemotherapy may affect surgery timing, movement, school or work, and whether physiotherapy or an orthopaedic support plan is needed.

Contact your team quickly for fever or chills, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, new numbness or weakness, or pain that suddenly worsens. Seek emergency help after a fall, for a suspected fracture, breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden loss of movement. Bone pain and reduced function deserve assessment, particularly during treatment.
