When is chemical peel recommended for periorbital hyperpigmentation?

Darkness around the eyes can reflect pigment, visible blood vessels, shadow from the eyelid shape, thin skin, rubbing, or a combination of factors. A peel can affect surface pigment but cannot correct every cause of dark circles. The clinician checks the exact location, skin thickness, eye symptoms, allergies, eczema, and history of irritation before recommending treatment.

The peel must be selected and applied with great care because the eye area is thin and close to the eye itself. Active dermatitis, infection, broken skin, recent sun exposure, or frequent rubbing may make treatment unsuitable until the area is calm.

Tell the clinician about contact lenses, eye disease, allergies, watery or itchy eyes, cold sores, previous peels, and products used near the eyelids. Attend without eye makeup if requested, and do not use an at-home acid peel near the eyes. Follow instructions about pausing retinoids, exfoliants, and fragranced products.

Afterward, keep the area clean and use only the recommended products. Do not rub, scratch, use makeup, or wear contact lenses until the clinician permits it. Shield the skin from daylight with sunglasses and advised sun protection, and report any eye discomfort rather than trying to cover it with cosmetics.

Contact the clinic urgently for severe pain, increasing swelling, blistering, discharge, or worsening redness. Seek emergency care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, chemical exposure to the eye, or swelling that affects breathing. Do not wait for a cosmetic follow-up if vision changes.

Ask whether the darkness is pigment or another type of shadow, whether the eyelid skin itself will be treated, and how the eye will be protected. Clarify which products and lenses to pause, how long irritation may last, and which eye symptoms require immediate review.
