When is chemical peel recommended for hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation can follow acne or irritation, occur after inflammation, or reflect a pattern such as melasma. A peel loosens some surface pigment and encourages shedding of treated skin, but the result depends on where the pigment sits and whether the trigger is still active. A clinician may examine the area, review skincare and medicines, and ask whether the colour changes after sun exposure.

A superficial peel is often considered before a stronger treatment when the concern is mainly surface unevenness. Active rash, infection, open skin, recent intense sun exposure, or a tendency to develop darker marks after irritation may change the recommendation.

Before treatment, share your history of cold sores, eczema, allergies, previous pigment changes, and any products or medicines that make skin sensitive.
