When is chemical peel recommended for acanthosis nigricans?

Acanthosis nigricans causes darker, thicker, velvety skin, often in the neck, armpits, groin, or other folds. It may be linked with insulin resistance, hormonal conditions, medicines, or rarely another illness. A peel can alter the surface of skin, but it does not treat the underlying trigger. Irritation can also make pigmentation more noticeable, particularly in skin that tends to darken after inflammation.

A clinician may examine the affected folds, ask when the change began, review medicines and health history, and recommend evaluation for an underlying cause. Treating that cause and reducing friction may be considered before a cosmetic procedure.
